Why enroll in the Type Discovery program?

A popular saying we use in coaching is that “You have to go slow in order to go fast.” It simply means that if you work through an issue slowly and carefully, you can pick up your pace afterwards because you have developed confidence around the matter. Going fast too soon or before you’re ready causes problems—either because mistakes are made, or confidence is lacking.

This phrase applies perfectly to individuals with respect to type. Most people learn about type by taking a quickie assessment which returns them a 4-letter code.  The whole process takes only a few minutes.  And then afterwards they feel frustrated because they have so many questions! They have no idea of what it means or how it is to be used.  They make wild assumptions and jump to conclusions. A gnawing uncertainty grows about whether their result is correct (and even the most official and psychometrically robust assessment is estimated to be accurate only 72% of the time, so it very well may not be).

Individuals often run to social media and post lengthy descriptions of themselves, begging complete strangers to weigh in.  They are invariably encouraged to take additional tests, which deliver conflicting or confusing results.  (And you know the definition of insanity, right?) Then they try to read everything they find online and become lost in a labyrinth of opinion, junk information, and fake experts, wasting hours charging down blind alleys and falling into rabbit holes.

In spite of these myriad obstacles, it is vitally important to know your type preferences.  Explicit awareness of your underlying values and motivations is a powerful asset, which your type pattern reveals.  People who don’t have the advantage of knowing their typology end up guessing about everything.  Their career path, financial choices, and relationship decisions are all based on incomplete and misleading information. As a source for discovering magical information about oneself, typology is a tremendous gift. It unearths values and allows you to live in conscious alignment with your innate preferences. But this is only true when your type pattern has been identified conclusively.

Rushed assessments and glib opinions gained from social media are time-wasters and pointless distractions from the overriding goal of decisive accuracy. They cloud the truth and contribute massive confusion. Worse, most people treat type at a notably superficial level and rarely penetrate into the fathoms of what typology can offer. (They have no idea that it originates in a depth psychology.)

This is where I come in.

Typing accurately is an art. I won’t throw an assessment at you (my clients have usually done them to death already). And while I might be able to figure out your type within 10 minutes of meeting you, the point is moot when you don’t know what your type pattern is—with absolute certainty—because that’s where doubts arise from.  Your typology has to be something you ultimately figure out yourself by recognizing how you fit into the design. Helping you to consciously choose and fully embrace your type pattern is the goal we aim to accomplish.

We will slow down in order to go fast. I will gently guide you through a proprietary, structured process, dialoguing every step of the way, allowing you at every crossroads to make your own informed determination about which alternative suits you best, until we arrive at a precise and irrefutable type pattern that fits you unambiguously.  For the finale of this process, you will embrace your type pattern with confidence. No more doubt. No more confusion and wondering. Your type pattern sticks.

While this experience requires a substantial investment in time and money, it costs far less than working with other helping professionals (i.e., a therapist) over a similar duration.  My methodology has a laser focus, delivering a practical and useful result to you more rapidly.  Accurate type self-knowledge will empower you to “go fast,” and spares you untold grief and frustration down the road, which costs aggravation and money trying to solve mistakes you might have avoided in the first place.  This is dedicated “me time,” and will be time and money well spent, as my clients frequently assure me.

My approach to type identification is more comprehensive than merely interacting with an assessment and validating it.  I deliberately slow the process of learning and carefully guide you through a structured process that puts the pieces together using a crafted, robust process that boasts 97% accuracy and has garnered high satisfaction ratings.  While eight hours of contact time over the course of six sessions may seem colossal in comparison with filling out a 20-minute assessment, it’s worth it—because if you do not understand what that 4-letter code represents and what parts of your personality it’s describing by the end of your engagement, then you’ve wasted even those 20 minutes. What we’re doing is forestalling all the time you are likely to waste after that 20 minute investment trying to ascertain whether your result was accurate, and comprehend what type is actually measuring. (Everybody and their brother has an uneducated opinion about it that they will want to share with you, by the way.)

The Process in Detail

Here’s how we’ll move through the program together:

Week 1: Essential Motivators webinar (2 hours)

You want to know your own inner needs and values and we’ll discover them using Temperament Theory, which has been around for centuries.  My take on it draws upon what I’ve learned from Drs. Keirsey and Berens and includes a 48-page workbook for your reference and my own homework exercises to lock in your learning.

Week 2: Coaching session (45 minutes)

After you have had time to absorb the learning and read the booklet on Temperament theory, we will discuss how the theory plays into your personal life with an emphasis on how you are personally motivated by your temperament preference.

Week 3: Interaction Styles webinar (2 hours)

Your sphere of influence includes others around you — whether it’s your life partner, your family, your community, or your workplace — the way you interact with others has a profound impact on how you navigate through your life.  In this part of my program, I draw upon Dr. Linda Berens’ “Interaction Styles,” which is based upon Marston’s Social Styles research.  Once again, I provide you with an abundance of materials in the form of a 40-page workbook and some worksheets that help you understand how this model works.

Week 4: Coaching session (45 minutes)

After you have had time to absorb the learning and read the booklet on Interaction Styles theory, we will discuss how the theory plays into your personal life with an emphasis on how you interact with others.

Week 5: Jung’s Cognitive Processes webinar (2 hours)

The third part of my program takes you into Jung’s theory of psychological types, which was the foundation of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® assessment.  But rather than just throw you into an assessment, I explain in detail the eight cognitive processes Jung identified, giving you the opportunity to experience each of them first-hand.  This is where “the rubber meets the road” — the core of your personality — the beginnings of understanding how your identity is shaped and how your psyche behaves in certain situations.  For this portion of the program, you’ll receive two booklets: one that explains Jung’s cognitive processes in detail, and one that maps all the preceding training into the familiar 16 personality types identified by the MBTI® assessment.

Week 6: Coaching session (45 minutes)

After you have had time to absorb the learning and read the booklets on Jung's theory of psychological types, we will discuss how the theory plays into your personal life with an emphasis on how your psyche processes information and makes decisions.

Go Slow to Go Fast

When I filmed my segment with Buzzfeed about psychological types, I suggested that taking a assessment for type was a lot like having sex on a first date.  That’s because it gets intimate so fast!  Suddenly you’re in over your head. You’re not prepared; you aren’t ready! It’s all too deep. Afterwards, you end up backpedaling, trying to understand what happened and what it meant.  So much time and confusion is wasted wondering and deciding what to do about it.  How to be with it?

When someone is handed a type pattern prematurely, they quickly get lost in the labyrinth, especially if they have been provided with inaccurate and confusing results. It can cause more harm than good.

When a professional guides you to a satisfying selection of your type pattern and reveals to you the intricate facets of typology, that knowledge is priceless. You went slow, so now you can go fast. Once you learn your type pattern, you also learn what your essential values are, and you can quickly and confidently make decisions about your career, your relationships, or anything to do with your values.  It becomes a foundation on which to live your life. Possessing that discernment is worth your weight in gold.
